Friday March 11: Planning for Arrival of a Big Cold Front, Three Cays in One Day

Looking ahead to tomorrow night, a big cold front is forecast to arrive bringing strong 25 knot winds clocking around from the NW to N to NE. In the Exumas, there aren’t many places to seek shelter when winds have any westerly component, and so we actually were planning on sailing to Eleuthera (Rock Harbor Sound) on Saturday to ride out the front, then return to the Exumas on Monday once the front had gone through. Harry spent several hours over the course of the past few days listening and watching wind forecasts and checking charts in search of safe havens and this seemed to be our best plan. The ocean cut near our current location, Conch Cut, provided an easy departure point so we planned to stay in the same general area today (Friday).

We began Friday with 12 knots of SE winds and sun and we motored from Bell Cay to Fowl Cay, a potential overnight spot but the swells coming in the Conch Cut from the ocean factored into our decision to make this a day stop only.  We had a good snorkel here before moving Juno 20 minutes over to Compass Cay where we visited Rachel’s Bubbles. This is a pool of water in which the waves and surge from the ocean on the east side of the Cay, wash over the rocks into a large pool of calm water creating a bubble bath. We had occasion to meet Katie and Eric and their two sons from Boise, Idaho’s recent liveaboards on TEEK while at the bubbles, but otherwise had the place all to ourselves. The gin clear waters and white sandy beach on Compass Cay was enjoyed for an hour or so before we headed north with Juno. We passed Bell Cay and anchored off Pasture Cay, 25 yards from the plane wreck. Then we put the dinghy on Juno for our sail tomorrow, and had a calm and quiet night with just three other boats nearby just off Pasture Cay.

We enjoy Rachels Bubbles

A quiet sunset to finish the day
