Meeks Patch: A Puffer Fish, a Sting Ray, and Minor Dinghy Troubles
The weather forecast gave us an extra day to kill before heading to New Providence (Nassau), so we hauled anchor and sailed about 1 hour north to Meeks Patch for the day. Winds were about 15 knots out of the east and we found just enough cover from wind by the southern tip of Meeks Patch. We snorkeled off the cay in some very shallow waters seeing many sea fans, a huge sea star, a very large puffer fish with huge brown eyes that kept peeking out from under a ledge, and finally, a 6 foot long sting ray 3/4ths buried in the sand, resting. We chose not to disturb him and instead, enjoyed an hour on our private beach reading and collecting small sea shells. On our way back to Juno, the dinghy engine died and wouldn’t restart, but thankfully we were upwind of Juno so Harry rowed and the wind pushed us the few hundred yards back. We then retraced our morning’s sail to Current Settlement so as to be 6 miles closer to Nassau for tomorrow’s departure.
