May 2nd Disappointments and a Wake-up Call

The moderate winds and eastern swells were making their way through the cut off Sandy Cay, a prime snorkeling spot in the Sea of Abaco, so we didn’t stop to snorkel and instead, carried on sailing to Tilloo Cay, just south of Tavern Cay where we spent the night. After lunch we put the dinghy in to check out two nearby snorkel spots - one just northeast of Tavern Cay and a second just 100 yards off our bow, Tilloo rocks but both locations were disappointing. The former was very shallow and we saw numerous submerged tree trunks and some hurricane debris, but we did see a sea star and a small grouper. At the Tilloo Rocks, we managed to see a trigger fish but not much else. We suspect that hurricane Dorian damaged the former reef as the guidebook had characterized it as a “fish hotel”.

Equally disappointing was the news that a fellow cruiser’s locked dinghy engine had been stolen yesterday right from their dinghy, in broad daylight, at Marsh Harbour. The dinghy was later found without the engine, and the owners were alerting all people in the vicinity to take extra precautions.  In the past it was always assumed that there was no reason to lock your dinghy in Marsh Harbour. That doesn't seem to apply anymore.
